Hawke’s Bay Defeats Taranaki to Reach NPC Semifinals

Hawke’s Bay secured a spot in the semifinals of the National Provincial Championship (NPC) with a decisive 26-12 victory over Taranaki at McLean Park in Napier on October 21, 2023. This win marks a significant turnaround for the Magpies, who faced a string of defeats against their rivals in recent encounters.
The match began with Taranaki dominating possession and territory, holding 91% of the territory and 67% of the ball during the first 15 minutes. Despite their control, the visitors managed only a single penalty from Josh Jacomb, leaving Hawke’s Bay fans apprehensive as their side struggled to break through Taranaki’s defense.
As the game progressed, the Magpies managed to turn the tide. Following a tense first half, Hawke’s Bay went into the break leading 14-6, thanks to tries from Le Roux Malan and Miracle Faiilagi. Malan’s impressive finish in the corner came in the 28th minute, while Faiilagi added another just before halftime.
Turning the Tables
The second half saw Hawke’s Bay maintain their momentum, despite facing disciplinary challenges. Folau Fakatava received a yellow card in the 38th minute, and Isaia Walker-Leawere followed suit in the 71st minute. Nevertheless, Hawke’s Bay’s defense held firm, successfully preventing Taranaki from scoring any tries throughout the match.
Lincoln McClutchie played a pivotal role, scoring a try in the second half after a brilliant pass from Malan. Despite a missed penalty attempt just before halftime, McClutchie maintained composure, allowing the Magpies to extend their lead. Sam Smith capped the scoring with a powerful try in the 66th minute, effectively sealing the match.
Taranaki’s frustration grew as they struggled to convert opportunities into points. Two potential tries were disallowed after video review, highlighting the tension on the field. Despite Jacomb’s efforts to close the gap with penalties, the Magpies’ relentless defense kept them at bay.
A Historic Opportunity
This victory propels Hawke’s Bay towards their first-ever NPC title, a dream that has eluded them in previous seasons. Just two years ago, they fell short in the final against the Bulls, and last season, a record home defeat against Taranaki deepened their rivalry. With this quarterfinal win, the Magpies have not only avenged earlier losses but also showcased their potential as serious title contenders.
Head coach Neil Barnes expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing their resilience despite playing with fewer players at times. “Our boys showed incredible heart and determination tonight,” Barnes noted. “This win is a testament to our hard work and commitment.”
As they prepare for the semifinals, Hawke’s Bay will look to build on this momentum and finally capture the title that has long eluded them. The victory over Taranaki not only marks a significant milestone in their campaign but also serves as a reminder that they are a force to be reckoned with in New Zealand rugby.
