Twain Triumphs in Sweynesse Stakes with Impressive Late Surge
Twain secured a significant victory in the Sweynesse Stakes at Rotorua on Sunday, marking the gelding’s first stakes win. The race offered a purse of $140,000, and Twain’s impressive performance demonstrated his growing prowess on the track. Trained by John Bell, Twain has consistently showcased his talent, finishing in the top four in all 12 of his starts, including six wins.
Debuting in July 2022, Twain has quickly become a standout in the racing scene. His recent form included a commendable second-place finish at Te Rapa, where he faced stiff competition from Midnight Edition while carrying a substantial weight. Returning to weight-for-age conditions for the Sweynesse Stakes, Twain was positioned as the third favourite behind Midnight Edition and Grail Seeker.
With regular rider Vinnie Colgan at the helm, Twain executed a flawless start, quickly finding his footing outside of Whiskey ‘N Roses. As the race progressed, Midnight Edition, starting from an outside draw, took the lead at the 800-meter mark, while Glamour Tycoon also positioned himself for a strong finish. The two competitors engaged in a fierce battle as they approached the home straight.
Twain’s late surge showcased his stamina and determination. As the leaders began to tire, Twain made his move, powering down the stretch to clinch victory. The triumph solidifies Twain’s status as a rising star in New Zealand horse racing, with expectations for future success in upcoming events.
The Sweynesse Stakes not only highlighted Twain’s abilities but also reinforced the effectiveness of John Bell’s training methods. With this win, Twain has further established himself as a contender to watch in future races.
