One of the highlighted routes is a 4 km walk that begins at the Lime Tree Cafe. From there, walkers can stroll down Whitford Wharf Road to a parking area, crossing a stream to reach the Village Green. This quaint spot features an old jetty, which historically serviced ferries traveling from Auckland. The Village Green itself is a welcoming grassy area equipped with picnic tables shaded by mature trees, perfect for a relaxing break.
To continue the adventure, walkers can access Wade’s Walkway by heading to the roundabout and walking approximately 50 metres along the bridle path towards Howick. The walkway meanders alongside the tidal Turanga Creek, where visitors are likely to encounter local wildlife, including herons and kingfishers. The area holds historical significance for local Māori, particularly the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki tribe, who utilized the creek for fishing and transportation.
The tranquil paths and lush surroundings of Wade’s Walkway create an inviting atmosphere, allowing walkers to connect with the rich heritage of the region. On the return journey, those wishing to explore local culture can visit the Quay Art Gallery, open Thursdays to Sundays, or stop by Whitford Merchants and the gift shops located opposite the BP gas station.
