Hawke’s Bay Advances to NPC Semifinals with 26-12 Victory

Hawke’s Bay secured a spot in the semifinals of the National Provincial Championship (NPC) with a decisive 26-12 victory over Taranaki at McLean Park on September 30, 2023. This win marks a significant turnaround for the Magpies, who previously faced a series of defeats against their rivals.
The match began with Taranaki dominating possession, holding 67% and controlling territory for the first 20 minutes. Despite this, they only managed to score through a penalty from Josh Jacomb, leaving them trailing 14-6 at halftime.
Hawke’s Bay fans were anxious as their team struggled to gain a foothold in the game. Taranaki’s pressure forced the Magpies into making three times the number of tackles. However, a turning point arrived when Hawke’s Bay finally capitalized on their opportunities.
Le Roux Malan opened the scoring with a try in the 28th minute, showcasing impressive skill as he crossed the line in the left corner. Miracle Faiilagi followed suit shortly after, adding another try in the 34th minute. The Magpies went into the break with a narrow lead, despite losing key players to yellow cards.
Decisive Second Half for the Magpies
The second half saw Hawke’s Bay continue to apply pressure, with Lincoln McClutchie scoring the third try just after the break. Although Taranaki managed to bring the score to 14-9 with another penalty from Jacomb, the Magpies quickly responded.
In the 66th minute, Sam Smith sealed the game with a decisive try, bolstered by a solid scrum and a powerful carry from Neria Fomai. Despite being reduced to 14 players after yellow cards for Folau Fakatava and Isaia Walker-Leawere, Hawke’s Bay’s defense held strong against Taranaki’s attempts to equalize.
Both teams had tries disallowed during the match, with the TMO intervening on two occasions, which added to the tension on the field. Taranaki’s frustrations grew as they failed to convert their territorial dominance into points.
This victory not only propels Hawke’s Bay into the semifinals but also serves as a significant statement after a challenging season. The Magpies are now one step closer to achieving their first top-flight NPC title, a feat that has eluded them in previous years.
As the crowd at McLean Park celebrated this important win, the focus will now shift to the challenges ahead in the semifinals, where Hawke’s Bay hopes to continue their impressive form.
