Hawke’s Bay Defeats Taranaki 26-12, Advances to Semifinals
Hawke’s Bay secured a spot in the semifinals of the National Provincial Championship (NPC) with a commanding 26-12 victory over Taranaki at McLean Park on October 14, 2023. This win marks a significant turnaround for the Magpies, who had suffered four consecutive losses to their regional rivals leading into this match.
The match began with Taranaki dominating possession and territory, claiming an impressive 91% territory and 67% possession in the first quarter. Despite this early advantage, Taranaki managed only a single penalty goal by Josh Jacomb in the first half. This missed opportunity proved costly as Hawke’s Bay fought back, converting their chances into points.
Strong performances from players like Le Roux Malan and Folau Fakatava were pivotal for the Magpies. Malan scored the first try of the match in the 28th minute, finishing in the left corner. Following his lead, Miracle Faiilagi added another try just before halftime, bringing the score to 14-6 as the teams entered the break.
Intense Second Half Sees Magpies Maintain Lead
The second half saw Taranaki attempting to close the gap, but Hawke’s Bay’s defense held firm. Despite losing two players to yellow cards, including Fakatava in the 38th minute, the Magpies maintained their composure. Taranaki’s Kaylum Boshier received a yellow card for a ruck infringement, further complicating their efforts to recover.
Hawke’s Bay’s Lincoln McClutchie scored a crucial try early in the second half, extending their lead to 19-6. Taranaki responded with another penalty from Jacomb, narrowing the score to 19-9. However, the Magpies struck decisively again in the 66th minute when Sam Smith powered over the line, solidifying a 26-9 advantage.
Taranaki’s attempts to rally were thwarted as their lineout struggles became evident. With the score at 26-9, Jacomb added another penalty, but it was not enough to alter the outcome. The match concluded with Hawke’s Bay triumphing 26-12, eliminating Taranaki from the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.
The victory reignites Hawke’s Bay’s hopes for their first-ever NPC title, a dream that has eluded them in recent years. The Magpies will now look ahead to the semifinals with renewed confidence, aiming to turn past disappointments into future success.
