Auckland Central Fire Station Reopens After Asbestos Clearance

Auckland’s central fire station, located on Pitt Street, has reopened following a thorough investigation into potential asbestos contamination. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed that all tests conducted on the premises returned negative results, allowing crews to return to their operational base.

The station was temporarily closed on Friday after initial dust samples taken from an unused utility room in July showed unexpectedly positive results for asbestos. This prompted immediate action, including the deep-cleaning of fire vehicles and the relocation of personnel to the regional headquarters on Poynton Terrace.

FENZ Deputy National Commander Megan Stiffler addressed the situation, stating that further air samples taken from the station had also tested negative for asbestos. The rapid response to the initial findings reflects the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its personnel and the public.

With the station now cleared for use, fire crews are back on site, ready to respond to emergencies across Auckland. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular safety checks in public facilities, particularly those involving potential hazardous materials.

FENZ continues to monitor the situation closely and is implementing additional safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
