Auckland FC Welcomes Sam Cosgrove in Exciting Season Opener

Cosgrove, 28, has transitioned to Auckland FC after a career that has taken him through 12 clubs, primarily in the United Kingdom. His decision to join the New Zealand-based team comes after a mixture of highs and lows, including notable achievements such as playing in European competitions and competing in a Scottish League Cup final against Celtic. However, he has also faced struggles, including a major health scare in 2020 that nearly ended his career.

Reflecting on his move, Cosgrove stated, “It was completely out of the blue and at first it takes you back. I had never even visited Australia or New Zealand, so it was a completely new scenario.” His willingness to embrace this new chapter demonstrates his desire for a fresh start, especially after feeling stagnant in his previous roles.

Aberdeen Breakthrough

Five years ago, Cosgrove was at the peak of his career, having made a name for himself at Aberdeen after joining from Carlisle United in January 2018. He scored an impressive 21 goals in his first full season, including 17 in the league, and followed that with another standout season, netting 23 goals during the 2019/20 campaign. His performances attracted attention, including a reported £2 million ($4.7 million) bid from a French club, which he declined.

Despite his success, a knee injury sidelined him for several months, compounded by a heart scare that raised concerns about his future in football. Fortunately, medical evaluations revealed the issue to be a genetic anomaly rather than a career-ending condition, allowing him to return to the game.

In January 2021, Cosgrove signed with Birmingham City for a reported £2 million. However, his time at the Championship club was disappointing, with only two starts and 324 minutes across 17 appearances. He spent much of his tenure on loan at various clubs, including Shrewsbury Town, AFC Wimbledon, and Plymouth Argyle, where he helped the team achieve promotion.

While his journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions, Cosgrove continues to bring significant experience to Auckland FC. His career statistics include 103 matches for Aberdeen and 123 appearances in League One, alongside experiences in prestigious competitions such as the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Settling in Auckland

As Auckland FC gears up for its home opener, Cosgrove is settling into his new environment. Pre-season training has been rigorous, with manager Steve Corica emphasizing high expectations for the strikers. Cosgrove described the training as “full on” but noted that he has found the squad to be welcoming and supportive.

“The manager demands a lot of work from the two strikers,” Cosgrove shared. “Everyone’s been incredibly welcoming, not just at the club but just around the city.” He appreciates the similarities between Auckland and the UK, stating, “It’s kind of if you had picked the best things out of the UK and brought them here.”

At 1.92 meters, Cosgrove is expected to be a crucial target man for Auckland FC, particularly during set pieces and crosses. “One thing that was mentioned to me as soon as I set foot in the door was the quality of the delivery from the flanks,” he said. “The more that the boys can feed me in the box, the happier I’ll be.”

While he experienced challenges in his previous match against Melbourne, where he struggled to get involved in the play, Cosgrove remains optimistic. He is focused on integrating into the team, securing his position as the primary striker, and contributing to the club’s success.

Looking ahead to the match against Western Sydney Wanderers, he stated, “For me, it’s getting myself integrated in the team, securing that No 9 spot and playing as many games as I can. If I’m playing games, week in, week out, and I’m scoring goals on a consistent basis, we will hit the team goals that we want.”
