Thieves Target Italian Tourists’ Campervan in Auckland Heist

An Italian couple experienced a distressing incident while visiting Auckland when their campervan was broken into and several valuable items were stolen. On September 24, 2023, Elisa Raso, aged 29, and Andrea Pelizzaro, aged 31, made a brief stop at the Hospice Shop on Delta Ave in New Lynn to donate clothes. Upon returning to their campervan, they discovered that their backpacks were missing.

The couple conducted a thorough inspection of their vehicle and found that the lock on the driver’s side door had been forcibly removed. Inside the stolen backpacks were high-value items, including laptops, headphones, chargers, and cash. The loss extended beyond monetary value, as the backpacks also contained sentimental items such as notebooks, drawings, and printed copies of important documents, which were irreplaceable, Raso explained.

Speaking to the local media, Raso described the situation as a “nightmare” for the couple, who had recently purchased the campervan for their travels across New Zealand. This incident highlights the risks that tourists may face when parking vehicles in urban areas, even for a short period.

As the couple navigates the aftermath of the theft, they have reported the incident to the police, who are investigating the break-in. Authorities urge visitors to remain vigilant and take precautions to secure personal items when leaving vehicles unattended, regardless of the duration.
