Community Mourns Teens Lost in Mount Maunganui Landslide
A tragic landslide in Mount Maunganui on January 21, 2024, claimed the lives of two teenagers, identified as Max Furse-Kee and Sharon Maccanico, both aged 15 and students at Pakuranga College. The incident has led to an overwhelming outpouring of grief from the community, as local leaders and residents express their condolences and support for the victims’ families.
The landslide, which occurred at a popular campground in the Bay of Plenty region, prompted an extensive search and rescue operation. However, as of January 24, authorities have transitioned the effort from rescue to recovery, acknowledging the heartbreaking reality that the two teens will not be brought home alive. Superintendent Tim Anderson, the Bay of Plenty District Commander, confirmed this shift in focus during a press briefing, emphasizing the dedication of emergency responders throughout the operation.
“Every single person involved in this operation has been focused solely on saving the lives of the people under the slip,” Anderson stated. “Tragically, it is now apparent that we will not be able to bring them home alive. This is heartbreaking news for the families and the dozens of people who have been working day and night, hoping for a positive outcome.”
In the wake of this devastating update, community leaders from east Auckland have come forward to pay tribute to Max and Sharon, as well as the other victims of the landslide. Bruce Kendall, chairperson of the Howick Local Board, shared his condolences and personal connection to the area. “On behalf of the Howick Local Board, we would like to offer our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives due to the landslide at Mount Maunganui,” he said. Kendall reflected on his childhood experiences at the campground, expressing disbelief over the tragedy.
Pakuranga MP and Health Minister Simeon Brown also voiced his sorrow over the loss. He stated, “My heart is absolutely broken by the news that Max Furse-Kee and Sharon Maccanico have lost their lives in the Mount Maunganui landslides. These were two young people with their whole lives ahead of them, taken far too soon in the most unimaginable way.”
As the local community grapples with this loss, support systems have been put in place for students and families affected by the tragedy. “The Pakuranga College community will be feeling this loss deeply. Starting the year under these circumstances will be hard, but please know that support is available,” Brown added.
Auckland’s deputy mayor, Desley Simpson, extended her sympathies, acknowledging the timing of the tragedy as families prepared for the new school year. “The mayor and I send our deepest condolences and know the school will be doing all it can to assist students and their families to process this utterly tragic loss,” she said.
Local councillor Bo Burns expressed her heartbreak through social media, highlighting the emotional impact on the broader community. “My thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with all the families, friends, and loved ones grieving this unimaginable loss,” she wrote.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also addressed the tragedy, reinforcing the community’s unity in mourning. During a press conference, he encouraged residents to support one another during this difficult time. “In moments like these, we are reminded how precious life is, and how important it is to wrap around one another with kindness, support, and love,” Luxon stated.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of Max Furse-Kee and Sharon Maccanico, the focus shifts to recovery and healing. Leaders are urging residents to come together and provide support for those affected, emphasizing the importance of compassion and solidarity in the face of such heartbreaking circumstances.
