In a thrilling Super Rugby Pacific encounter on March 9, 2024, the Fijian Drua secured their first victory of the season against the Hurricanes, winning 25-20 at Churchill Park in Lautoka. The match, played in challenging wet conditions, showcased the Drua’s ability to capitalize on opportunities, turning around a halftime deficit to claim a crucial win.

The Hurricanes initially seemed to have a firm grip on the match, leading 17-13 at halftime after scoring three tries in the first half. Fehi Fineanganofo, Peter Lakai, and Billy Proctor found the try line for the visitors, while the Drua responded with a converted try from Motikiai Murray and two penalties from Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula.

Drua’s Resilience Shines in Second Half

The second half saw a transformation in momentum. After an initial penalty from Jordie Barrett extended the Hurricanes’ lead to seven points, the Drua struck back decisively. A pivotal moment came when Tuidraki Samusamuvodre intercepted a pass from Josh Moorby, scoring a try that shifted the tide. Shortly thereafter, Etonia Waqa added another try, solidifying the Drua’s lead and showcasing their defensive prowess.

Despite having several scoring opportunities, the Hurricanes struggled to maintain their composure in the slippery conditions, leading to handling errors and missed chances. Barrett expressed disappointment, noting, “We’re very disappointed we didn’t take a couple of opportunities late in the game.” He acknowledged the Drua’s disciplined defense, which proved to be a crucial factor in their victory.

The Drua’s fullback, Ilaisa Droasese, and centre Samusamuvodre were standout performers, while Armstrong-Ravula orchestrated play effectively. Their strong defensive effort limited the Hurricanes to just a single penalty in the second half.

Pivotal Match for Drua’s Season

This victory is particularly significant for the Drua, who had previously struggled in the season with losses to Moana Pasifika and the NSW Waratahs. The win not only marked their first points in the competition but also revitalized their campaign. Coach Mick Byrne praised the team’s effort, highlighting their ability to adapt and overcome the challenges posed by the weather.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next match against the undefeated Waratahs in Sydney. The team’s inability to convert opportunities into points against the Drua raises questions about their execution under pressure, particularly in adverse conditions.

As the season progresses, the Drua will look to build on this momentum, while the Hurricanes must address their shortcomings if they hope to remain competitive in the Super Rugby Pacific.
