Health Coalition Urges Measles Precautions Ahead of Kapa Haka Event

A Māori health coalition is urging attendees of the upcoming National Primary Schools Kapa Haka competition in Tauranga to take necessary precautions against measles, as the country faces an outbreak with 13 confirmed cases. The event is set to commence on Sunday and is expected to draw large crowds.

Concerns regarding the event were raised during a hui involving Māori and Pacific general practitioners, according to Dr. Nina Bevin from the National Hauora Coalition. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding public health, particularly for vulnerable populations. “This event was specifically raised at the hui. We’ve had assurances from the National Public Health Service, which has collaborated with the event’s organizing committee. On-site immunization providers and health services will be available,” Dr. Bevin stated.

As an additional measure, attendees will be asked to verify their vaccination status prior to traveling to Tauranga. Dr. Bevin highlighted that parents with children under one year old should exercise caution about attending large gatherings, given the heightened risks for this age group. “If I had a child under one in my family, I would be concerned about attending that event. We know our young tamariki are particularly at risk of severe outcomes if they contract measles,” she remarked.

Dr. Bevin called on the community to take action against the spread of measles, urging everyone to ensure they are fully immunized. “Measles is a very serious illness. We need to act now to protect our whānau and our mokopuna from measles,” she added. For individuals born after 1969, she recommended confirming vaccination status and obtaining a second dose of the measles vaccine if they have not yet received it. “It’s safe to have additional doses; there’s no harm in getting vaccinated again.”
