In her post-election statement, Barker expressed her gratitude towards the community for their overwhelming support. She stated that she felt “humbled and honoured” by the trust placed in her and her vision for Dunedin. She acknowledged the significance of her election, particularly in the context of following in the footsteps of Dunedin’s first female mayor, Sukhi Turner.
Priorities for a Progressive Future
As she prepares to take on her new role, Barker has outlined a clear set of priorities aimed at fostering growth and inclusivity in Dunedin. One of her primary objectives is to advocate strongly for improvements at Dunedin Hospital, emphasizing the need for enhanced healthcare facilities in the region.
Barker is also committed to ensuring value for ratepayers and improving the culture within the city council. She aims to promote Dunedin as a vibrant city and focus on economic development initiatives that can benefit local residents. Her election represents a new chapter for Dunedin, characterized by a spirit of optimism and a dedication to the city’s future.
The election outcome marks a significant moment in Dunedin’s political landscape. Barker’s leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective and a collaborative approach to local governance. With her commitment to community engagement and transparency, she has set an ambitious agenda that seeks to address the pressing needs of Dunedin’s residents.
As Barker embarks on her mayoral term, the community will be keenly observing the implementation of her priorities and the impact of her leadership on the city’s development. Her election not only signifies a personal achievement but also reflects the strides made towards gender representation in local politics.
