Mangawhai Museum’s Dinner & Auction Raises Over $30,000
A recent fundraising event has significantly benefited the Mangawhai Museum, raising over $30,000 during its eighth annual Dinner & Auction on August 23, 2023. The event, held at the Mangawhai Tavern for the first time, attracted a sold-out crowd and has been celebrated as one of the museum’s most successful fundraisers to date.
Museum manager Angela Cook attributed the success of the evening to the dedication of volunteers, particularly Sharon Fenner and Faye Willemsen-Ward, who spent months organizing the event. “These funds will help us begin making exciting updates to our permanent displays,” Cook stated. She highlighted plans to revitalise the entrance, expand the tangata whenua exhibit, and create an interactive Cabinet of Curiosities.
Transformative Evening for a Worthy Cause
The Mangawhai Tavern was elegantly decorated for the occasion, featuring candlelit tables and fresh flower arrangements. Attendees were greeted with a complimentary glass of bubbles courtesy of Bayleys Mangawhai, followed by a sumptuous three-course meal and lively entertainment from the local band Loose Covers.
Bidding during the auction was spirited, with several standout items drawing considerable interest. Among the popular prizes were a luxury fishing getaway, a round of golf at the prestigious Tara Iti, and tools donated by local businesses such as Mangawhai ITM and Carters Mangawhai. The auction also featured Mystery Envelopes, priced at $30 and $50, offering vouchers and prizes donated by retailers in Mangawhai.
Two of the evening’s most generous participants, Vic and Maria Dickerson, received special recognition for their contributions, being awarded a Mangawhai Museum Lifetime Membership. Cook expressed her gratitude, stating, “Some guests joked they should open a tab for how much they intended to spend – and spend they did.”
Community Spirit and Future Plans
The event saw robust support from local businesses, many of which purchased entire tables and donated auction items. Reflecting on the success of the evening, Cook noted that the vibrant atmosphere created a solid foundation for future events. “It was the first time we’d run this event with this team at this venue, so we learned a few things that will make next year’s event even better,” she said.
Cook also acknowledged the need for improvements, such as a better sound system to ensure everyone could enjoy the festivities. The positive feedback from guests, combined with the funds raised, positions the Mangawhai Museum for a bright future as it continues to engage the community and enhance its offerings.
