Auckland and Northland Brace for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms
A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Auckland and Northland this afternoon, with heavy rain and marble-sized hail predicted. The watch is set to run from 1 PM to 9 PM today as a stationary front over the upper North Island becomes unstable.
According to MetService meteorologist Michael Pawley, the unstable conditions are expected to lead to heavy showers and a significant risk of severe thunderstorms. For the areas inland and towards the western parts of Northland, along with Auckland near the Kaipara Harbour, there is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms. This includes the possibility of rainfall rates between 24 to 40 mm/h in isolated locations.
Weather Forecast and Implications
The forecast indicates a high likelihood of regular thunderstorms for these regions this afternoon and evening, with the risk of strong winds and heavy downpours. Local authorities advise residents to prepare for potential flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
As the storm approaches, the public is urged to stay informed through reliable channels and heed any warnings issued by weather services. The potential for significant rainfall could impact not just individuals but also infrastructure and emergency services in the area.
Monitoring continues as the weather develops, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
