Community Unites for Vibrant Kapa Haka Picnic in Cromwell
The annual Kapa Haka Picnic in the Park took place at Anderson Park in Cromwell on November 4, 2023, bringing together children from various local educational institutions. Organized by Te Kāhui Ako te Awanui, the event showcased performances of traditional waiata and haka, captivating a large audience of approximately 1,000 supportive whānau.
This year marked a significant milestone, as the number of participants has increased dramatically, prompting organizers to move the celebration outdoors for the first time. The community embraced this change with enthusiasm, arriving with picnic rugs and a spirit of celebration. The event highlighted the strong cultural ties within the community, as families gathered to support their children’s performances.
A community grant from Contact Energy and assistance from the Lyons Club and Main Freight contributed to the event’s success. Their support allowed for a complimentary sausage sizzle, adding to the festive atmosphere. Behind the scenes, teams of teachers, school support staff, and parent volunteers coordinated the event, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone involved.
The weather played a favorable role, enhancing the day’s festivities. The young performers, or tamariki and rangatahi, impressed attendees with their vibrant displays of cultural pride. Mason Stretch, Principal of Cromwell College and the event’s MC, underscored the importance of Kapa Haka in fostering community connections. He expressed gratitude to the kaiako and kapa haka rangatira for their dedication to inspiring a love for this traditional art form in the children.
The Kapa Haka Picnic serves not only as a celebration of cultural heritage but also as a testament to the strength of community bonds in Cromwell. As families and friends came together, the event reaffirmed the role of Kapa Haka in uniting people through shared traditions and collective pride. The success of this year’s gathering suggests a promising future for the event, as it continues to grow and engage the community in the years to come.
