Celebrating the Life of Lucas Mearian: A Tech Journalism Pioneer
Lucas Mearian, a distinguished Senior Reporter for Computerworld, passed away unexpectedly on October 21, 2025, following heart surgery. His sudden departure has left a significant void in the tech journalism community, where he was both a respected journalist and a cherished colleague. Mearian is remembered for his dedication to technology reporting and his warm spirit, leaving behind his wife, Kim, and their family.
A Career Marked by Dedication and Curiosity
Mearian’s career in journalism began after nearly a decade of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He transitioned to newspaper journalism, serving as a daily newspaper reporter and briefly as editor-in-chief at a local weekly publication. In June 2000, he joined Computerworld, where he devoted the next 25 years to exploring enterprise technology with an unparalleled enthusiasm.
Throughout his time at Computerworld, Mearian covered a wide array of topics, including enterprise storage, automotive technology, and data privacy. He earned numerous awards for his insightful reporting on fintech, cryptocurrency, and blockchain. His recent work focused on generative AI, the reshoring of chip manufacturing to the U.S., and the evolving landscape of remote and hybrid work.
Mearian’s ability to uncover compelling stories in what some might see as mundane topics set him apart. His legendary exploration of data storage included a remarkable visit to a mine in western Pennsylvania operated by Iron Mountain, where he examined geothermal conditions for electronic document storage.
A Colleague and Friend to Many
Lucas Mearian’s expertise extended beyond writing. He frequently appeared on camera for Computerworld and participated in events organized by its parent company, Foundry. At the recent CIO 100 conference, he stepped in on short notice to host a media booth, conducting over 20 interviews with C-suite executives, demonstrating his ability to connect with industry leaders.
More than his professional accomplishments, colleagues remember Mearian for his kindness and generosity. He was known for supporting fellow journalists, promoting their work on social media, and sharing homemade pies during the holiday season. His spirit of camaraderie was evident as he celebrated the successes of others just as passionately as his own.
Mearian also provided personal support to colleagues during difficult times. His deep faith influenced his actions, as he consistently reached out to offer encouragement and assistance in times of need. He was always ready to lend an ear or a helping hand, embodying a sense of community and care that resonated with those around him.
In his personal life, Mearian enjoyed traveling with Kim, exploring the beautiful landscapes of New England. They frequently visited Vermont and Newport, Rhode Island, where he found tranquility by the coast and shared his love for the region with colleagues.
As the tech journalism community mourns his loss, Mearian’s family has requested that donations be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project, reflecting his commitment to supporting veterans and the causes he believed in.
Lucas Mearian leaves behind a legacy of excellence in journalism, a spirit of kindness, and countless memories for those who had the privilege of knowing him. His impact on the field and the lives he touched will not be forgotten.
