Australia Clinches Constellation Cup in Thrilling Finale
The Australian Diamonds claimed the Constellation Cup in a nail-biting finish, edging out the Silver Ferns 12-11 in a series decider held in New Zealand. Earlier in the evening, the Silver Ferns managed to win test four with a score of 62-57, forcing a unique 14-minute decider for the first time in the series. This victory marks Australia’s first win on New Zealand soil since 2021 and provides coach Stacey Marinkovich with just her second win in the country since taking over the coaching role.
In the decisive match, played in two seven-minute halves, the Silver Ferns started strong, quickly taking a 3-0 lead. However, the Diamonds responded effectively, leveling the score and then gaining the advantage to lead 7-5 at halftime. As the game progressed, the Silver Ferns faced challenges, managing several midcourt players who began to cramp, necessitating rotations on their lineup.
The momentum shifted back to Australia as they built a four-goal lead. Yet, the Silver Ferns fought back fiercely, with Mila Reuelu-Buchanan making a crucial tip that allowed them to equalize at 11-11. In the final moments, the Diamonds demonstrated tactical awareness, managing the clock efficiently to secure the win at 12-11. The game concluded on a somber note as Sunday Aryang, a Diamonds defender, appeared to sustain a serious injury.
Earlier in the evening, the Silver Ferns showcased resilience in the fourth test, overcoming a sluggish start. They trailed 17-12 at the first break and 33-27 at halftime. The Diamonds’ shooters, Sophie Garbin and Kiera Austin, were particularly effective, working seamlessly to dominate the back space. Their attackers demonstrated patience, waiting for the right moment to create opportunities for their shooters.
Strong performances from the Silver Ferns began to emerge in the second half. Young defender Catherine Hall was instrumental in lifting the defensive end, while Kelly Jackson contributed significantly, helping to level the score at 37-37 midway through the third quarter. Maddy Gordon, moving to wing attack, added depth and energy to the Silver Ferns’ offensive strategy.
Despite the Silver Ferns’ increased urgency and determination, the Diamonds remained composed, leading 46-43 at the end of the third quarter. The Silver Ferns surged forward, briefly taking the lead at 57-51 before ultimately sealing the win in the fourth test.
This series showcased the competitive spirit of both teams and the excitement that netball can deliver. The thrilling finale not only highlighted the skill and strategy involved in the sport but also set the stage for future encounters between these two formidable rivals.
