Marlon Williams has been honoured with the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll Award Kaitito Kaiaka for his song Aua Atu Rā, marking a significant moment in New Zealand’s music scene. The award ceremony took place at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Ōtautahi (Christchurch) on October 7, 2025, celebrating the remarkable achievements of New Zealand songwriters over the past year.
The APRA Silver Scroll Award has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s music industry for the past 60 years, acknowledging the exceptional talent of the nation’s songwriters. This peer-voted award provides a unique platform for artists to be recognised by their colleagues for their songwriting prowess. Williams’ win is particularly noteworthy, as it represents his fourth nomination for the award and his second victory, following his success in 2018 for the song Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore.
Williams co-wrote Aua Atu Rā with Te Pononga Tamati-Elliffe (KOMMI), a collaboration that showcases their innovative approach to music composition. The song has been well-received, resonating with audiences and critics alike, which contributed to its selection for this prestigious accolade.
The event also highlighted the diverse range of talent within the New Zealand music industry. Performances by various artists enriched the night, creating an atmosphere of celebration and camaraderie among musicians. With the APRA Silver Scroll Award being a significant milestone for many artists, the recognition of Williams further cements his status as a leading figure in contemporary music.
As the award continues to evolve, it remains a vital part of New Zealand’s cultural landscape, inspiring new generations of songwriters to express their creativity and share their stories through music. The 2025 ceremony not only honoured past achievements but also set the stage for future artistic developments within the industry.
