East Auckland Designer Shines in Resene Colour of Fashion Competition

A talented fashion student from East Auckland, Keisha Duong Kheav, has emerged as a finalist in the prestigious Resene Colour of Fashion competition. The 19-year-old, hailing from Flat Bush, is currently pursuing her studies at Whitecliffe College’s Manukau campus. This year’s judging day was a significant event, showcasing the creativity and skill of students preparing to graduate.
The competition featured twenty-two students from three campuses of Whitecliffe, all enrolled in a two-year Diploma in Fashion. Each student presented designs crafted from silk twill dyed in innovative Resene fashion colours. Ultimately, thirteen finalists were selected, including six from Auckland and seven from the Wellington campus.
Keisha drew inspiration from the adage, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” She expressed the personal significance of her project, saying, “This project means so much to me because I see it helping me pave the way through the fashion industry.” Her passion reflects the opportunity this competition presents, motivating her to further her studies in fashion.
Celebrating Creativity and Change
The judging venue featured butterflies adorning the white walls, symbolizing this year’s theme, “Colours of Change.” This theme represents the transformation students experience throughout their lives and careers. Since its inception in 2014, the Resene Colour of Fashion competition has supported final-year fashion students, offering them a platform to express their evolving identities and experiences.
The design brief encouraged students to consider the dynamic nature of life, emphasizing resilience and transformation, akin to the rich tapestry of nature. The environment on judging day was electric, complete with professional models, cameras, and a dedicated judging panel, all contributing to the immersive experience.
All participating students will have the opportunity to showcase their designs at the Whitecliffe Graduate Showcase, held in both Auckland and Wellington in November. Additionally, their work will be featured in an online gallery curated by Resene.
The winner of this year’s edition will receive a cash prize of $1,000, generously provided by Resene. Karen Warman from Resene remarked on the value of this initiative, stating, “We’re thrilled to have shared this project with our valued partner Whitecliffe for more than a decade. Together we’re bringing visibility to a generation of creative young talent.”
Preparing Students for Fashion Careers
According to Doula Matheos of Whitecliffe, this project serves as an essential stepping stone for students entering the fashion industry. She highlighted the diverse career paths available to graduates, including roles as merchandisers, buyers, costume designers, and garment technicians. Whitecliffe alumni have successfully joined renowned brands such as Weta Workshop and Entire Studios.
This collaboration between Resene and Whitecliffe not only fosters student creativity but also equips them with the skills needed for success in the contemporary fashion landscape, both in New Zealand and globally. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, initiatives like the Resene Colour of Fashion competition play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of designers.
