Historic Arrowtown Cottage Hits the Market for Sale
A significant piece of Arrowtown’s heritage is now available for purchase. The historic home, located at the corner of Anglesea and Merioneth Streets, was originally constructed in 1878 for the town’s first magistrate. This category 2 listed property has a rich history, having served as a residence for Catholic nuns for approximately 30 years.
The current owners have taken great care to restore and extend the home, which includes the addition of two bedrooms in the early 1900s. The extensive renovations, designed by Queenstown architect Michael Wyatt, began in the mid-2000s and have highlighted the home’s historical features while modernizing its layout.
Bayleys Arrowtown agent Tracey Laker, who is collaborating with colleague Todd Weeks on the sale, emphasized the vendors’ commitment to preserving the property’s character. Many of the interior schist walls, initially covered in plaster, have been carefully restored to reveal the original stone beneath.
In addition to the main house, the latest renovations incorporated an outbuilding thought to originate from the former goldmining settlement of Macetown. This structure has been transformed into a bunk room, adding to the property’s unique charm.
The cottage is also distinguished by its well-established gardens and mature fruit trees, further enhancing its appeal as a historic residence. The marketing of this property presents a rare opportunity for buyers interested in owning a piece of Arrowtown’s storied past.
With its blend of history and modern design, this heritage home is poised to attract attention in the real estate market.
