Macleans College’s Z Club Celebrates 10 Years of Empowerment

Members of the Z Club at Macleans College recently celebrated a significant milestone: a decade of dedicated service aimed at improving the lives of women and girls in East Auckland. Founded in 2015, the Z Club has been an essential part of the community, aligning with Zonta International’s mission to empower women globally.
At a recent anniversary event, over 60 members gathered to commemorate this achievement. The celebration included notable attendees such as Jen McKinlay-Birkin, the national governor of Zonta New Zealand, and representatives from the Howick College Z Club and the Macleans College board of trustees.
In her address, McKinlay-Birkin emphasized the importance of intergenerational dialogue within the organization. She stated, “What I’ve learnt from Z Club members is that you look after older Zontians. You teach us about what the world is like now, what you are living with.” Her remarks highlighted the vital role that young members play in shaping the organization’s future and ensuring its relevance.
The Z Club has not only focused on local initiatives but has also contributed to larger projects. During the event, the executive presented a cheque for $1,000 to support the Zonta Club of New Zealand’s district project, Foster Hope. This financial support demonstrates the club’s commitment to addressing issues faced by women and girls in their community.
Barbara Astill, president of Zonta East Auckland, expressed gratitude for the Z Club’s ten years of service. She acknowledged their enthusiasm and hard work, stating, “Thank you for your commitment and energy and the wonderful service to others over the past 10 years.”
Kelly Ma, a member of the Z Club, shared her appreciation for the opportunities provided by Macleans College. She noted the importance of organizing events that allow members to fundraise for causes they are passionate about. This active involvement not only empowers the students but also fosters a sense of community service and responsibility.
The celebration concluded with the cutting of a cake, symbolizing the Z Club’s journey and future aspirations. As the organization looks forward to continuing its mission, the members remain committed to embodying the values of servant leadership. As McKinlay-Birkin aptly put it, “Always remember the power of doing things for others. You will never know where it may lead you.”
With a decade of impactful service behind them, the Z Club at Macleans College stands poised to continue its advocacy and support for women and girls in East Auckland, inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.
