Remembering Evelyn Webster: A Tennis Pioneer and Community Leader
Evelyn Webster, a distinguished tennis player and community advocate, passed away in late August 2023 at the age of 101. Born Evelyn Attwood, she made significant contributions to the sport during her active years in the 1940s. Her legacy includes winning the junior girls’ national title in 1941 and the national ladies’ singles championship in 1948.
Webster’s journey in tennis began in her youth, where she quickly rose to prominence. After her notable victories, she made a significant life decision in 1950 when she sailed to England. From 1951 to 1955, she resided in London, where she worked full-time as a secretary while continuing to compete in tennis. During her time in England, she participated in four editions of the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, competing in both singles and doubles events.
While her success at Wimbledon was commendable, Webster found greater achievements on the county tennis circuit, where she claimed several titles. The combination of her talent and dedication made her a respected figure in the tennis community.
In late 1954, Webster returned to New Zealand, where she married Eric Webster. Together, they played a pivotal role in establishing an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island, affectionately known as Webster’s Wonderland. This initiative not only showcased their love for the community but also created a lasting legacy that continues to benefit locals and tourists alike.
Evelyn Webster’s contributions to tennis and her community are remembered fondly. Her passion for the sport and her commitment to enhancing the lives of those around her left an indelible mark. As the tennis world reflects on her life, her achievements and community initiatives will continue to inspire future generations.
