Former Otago Mayor Shines on The Chase, Dances to Victory
Former Otago mayor John Cadogan captivated audiences on the popular quiz show, The Chase New Zealand, showcasing his knowledge and charm. The 60-year-old contestant not only demonstrated his quizzing skills but also revealed a surprising talent for dance, reminiscent of his role in a local theatre production of The Full Monty.
During the episode aired on March 15, 2024, Cadogan impressed both the show’s host and its formidable quiz expert, Anne Hegerty, known as “The Governess.” After discussing his theater experience, Hegerty jokingly asked if he would watch her perform the full monty, to which Cadogan humorously responded that he would enjoy being part of the audience.
In the initial cash-builder round, Cadogan showcased his quiz prowess by answering only two questions incorrectly, ultimately raising $16,000. Although he was offered a higher amount of $50,000 for a riskier option, his cautious nature led him to choose the conservative path. He quoted his wife, saying, “Pride comes before a fall,” reinforcing his decision to stick with the safer sum.
As the chase commenced, Cadogan answered every question correctly, allowing him to evade Hegerty’s attempts to catch him. His successful performance led to an impromptu celebration, where he even displayed a few dance moves on national television, prompting Hegerty to acknowledge his cleverness with the words, “He’s clever.”
Despite his strong individual performance contributing to his team’s overall total of $44,000, Cadogan and his teammates ultimately faced defeat in the final chase, where Hegerty caught them with time to spare. While they left the show without any prize money, Cadogan gained newfound recognition in New Zealand society.
This episode highlighted not only Cadogan’s intelligence but also his engaging personality, leaving an impression on viewers across the country. As he returns to his community, his appearance on the show will surely spark conversations and perhaps even inspire others to take their chances in the spotlight.
