HeliVentures: Pioneering Safety and Innovation in Aviation

HeliVentures, an aviation company based in the South Island, has made significant strides in safety and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in the industry. Founded by Craig and Nicki McMillan, the company emphasizes its commitment to investing in advanced equipment, training, and operational systems to ensure top-tier service for its clients.
Craig McMillan highlighted that safety remains the cornerstone of their operations. “Our biggest focus has always been on safety and delivering the best service possible to our clients,” he stated. This dedication translates into fewer maintenance issues, more reliable aircraft, and streamlined operations, which clients greatly appreciate. As a result, HeliVentures has cultivated a loyal customer base, generating repeat business and numerous recommendations.
Innovative Technologies in Rural Operations
HeliVentures is at the forefront of integrating new technologies to enhance its services, particularly in rural operations. The company has collaborated with GPS mapping providers and power companies to incorporate real-time powerline infrastructure data onto pilots’ maps. This innovative approach significantly reduces the risk of wire strikes during low-level agricultural flying.
Additionally, HeliVentures has tested new chemical mixes with suppliers aimed at improving weed control, which helps farmers lower their costs. These advancements demonstrate the company’s proactive stance on finding solutions that benefit both their operations and the agricultural community.
Despite the challenges inherent in the aviation sector, the McMillans prioritize giving back to their local community. Their base frequently hosts tours for schools and community groups, and they actively participate in sponsorships and donations throughout the region. Nicki McMillan expressed gratitude for their dedicated team, stating, “We’re lucky to have a team as passionate as we are. They share the load and help us give back where we can.”
Commitment to Community and Emergency Services
The McMillans’ commitment to community service extends to emergency response efforts. Each summer, HeliVentures offers its helicopters and expertise to support Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Search and Rescue, and police operations. Craig McMillan shared the rewarding aspect of this work, saying, “It sometimes feels like we can never switch off, but being able to help in an emergency is hugely rewarding. We just happen to have a very handy tool that can make a real difference.”
Looking towards the future, the McMillans recognize the potential of drone technology in rural aviation, although they maintain that helicopters will always be integral to their business. They have already obtained certification to operate drones but remain focused on keeping helicopters at the core of their operations.
Craig, often described as humble, believes that effective leadership is rooted in teamwork and maintaining high standards. “Nicki’s the real boss,” he joked, acknowledging their collaborative approach. “We don’t enjoy the spotlight – we’d rather just get the job done and see our staff succeed.”
Outside of their professional lives, family and friends provide the McMillans with a vital balance. “We love watching our kids’ sports and spending time at the lakes with friends,” Nicki shared. “They are what keep us motivated.”
In summary, HeliVentures exemplifies a model of safety, innovation, and community engagement in aviation. With a focus on advanced technology and a commitment to serving others, the McMillans are setting a high standard in the industry while remaining deeply rooted in their community.
