Heavy Rain Causes Flooding and Landslides in South Island
Heavy rainfall has led to significant surface flooding and landslides across several highways in New Zealand’s South Island. The adverse weather conditions have prompted the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to issue warnings for motorists, advising caution on State Highways 6, 7, 67, 67A, and 73. The agency reported that areas between Lewis Pass and Springs Junction, Reefton and Ikamatua, and Arthur’s Pass Village and Kumara Junction are particularly affected.
Warnings and Weather Updates
According to MetService, a weather front moving up the South Island is expected to stall, resulting in a weekend marked by heavy rain and strong northwest winds, particularly in central and southern regions. Heavy rain warnings have been issued for the Buller and Tararua ranges until Sunday, while a strong wind watch is in effect for the bottom of the North Island. This warning covers Wellington, Wairarapa, and the Tararua District until 20:00 on Sunday. Winds in exposed areas could reach severe gale strength, with gusts of up to 100 km/h anticipated in the capital.
The weather will present a stark contrast across the country. While the South Island grapples with flooding and gusty winds, the eastern North Island is expected to experience warmer, summer-like conditions. MetService forecasts temperatures of 28°C in Hastings and 27°C in Napier, driven by gusty northwesterlies.
Impact on Travel and Safety Precautions
Travelers are advised to remain vigilant as rockfalls have also been reported on State Highway 6 near Meybille Bay. The NZTA is closely monitoring conditions and has recommended that motorists adjust their travel plans accordingly. Rain is expected to ease briefly on the West Coast on Saturday before another front arrives later in the day, bringing additional showers.
In the Nelson Lakes and Tasman District, heavy rain watches are in place until mid-afternoon and midnight on Saturday, respectively. Both regions face a moderate likelihood of these watches being upgraded to warnings, according to MetService.
Meanwhile, the east coast of the South Island is set for a pleasant start to the weekend, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 24°C expected in areas stretching from Oamaru to Culverden on Friday.
As New Zealand prepares for a weekend of unpredictable weather, residents and travelers alike are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
