Tajana Triumphs Over Lollapalooza in Thrilling Sunline Vase Finish
The Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Sunline Vase, held on March 10, 2024, at Ellerslie, concluded with a nail-biting finish as the three-year-old fillies Tajana and Lollapalooza emerged as joint favorites for the upcoming 1000 Guineas. In a race that many pundits had anticipated would be a two-horse showdown, Tajana edged out Lollapalooza by a mere nose, securing her second consecutive stakes victory.
Pre-race discussions predominantly focused on Tajana and Lollapalooza, both regarded as the standout fillies of the spring racing season. Despite acknowledging the competition from other experienced runners, the excitement centered on these two horses. The race unfolded as predicted, with both fillies initially trailing behind the pack, poised to make their moves in the latter stages.
Riders Vinnie Colgan, aboard Lollapalooza, and George Rooke, on Tajana, positioned themselves strategically in the early part of the race, settling in second and third last, respectively. As the field approached the home turn, Rooke opted to steer Tajana towards the outer edge, while Colgan maneuvered between runners in pursuit of Little Black Dress, who had taken the lead with just 200 meters remaining.
In a dramatic conclusion, Tajana and Lollapalooza surged forward, closing the gap on Little Black Dress. At the 100-meter mark, both fillies overtook the leader, with Tajana managing to thrust her head down at just the right moment to claim the victory. This impressive performance follows Tajana’s recent triumph in the Group 3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) just a month prior.
The race not only showcased the talents of these promising fillies but also sets the stage for an exciting lead-up to the 1000 Guineas. With both Tajana and Lollapalooza demonstrating exceptional abilities, the upcoming race promises to be a captivating event for racing enthusiasts.
As the spring racing calendar progresses, the performances of Tajana and Lollapalooza will undoubtedly continue to be the focal point, as both competitors aim for further success in their racing careers.
