Artists Explore Diverse Visions of Land at Mangawhai Gallery
An intriguing new exhibition titled This Land is now on display at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, featuring the works of renowned painter Denis Bourke and photographer Joel Cayford. The exhibition presents a compelling exploration of the concept of land through the distinct artistic lenses of both creators.
Bourke’s Artistic Journey Through New Zealand’s Landscape
Denis Bourke’s contributions to the exhibition include a series of acrylic paintings that capture the essence of New Zealand’s dynamic landscapes. Utilizing both canvas and specially constructed wood panels, Bourke’s work showcases a textured approach that enhances the visual experience. His inspiration stems from his hikes along the Routeburn Track, where the breathtaking southern vistas ignited his passion for the unique flora and topography of the region.
Bourke reflects on his connection to the land, stating, “These paintings reflect my lifelong passion for the unique and ancient New Zealand land and flora, which have formed me as a person and as an artist.” This sentiment underscores the depth of his creative process, linking personal development to the natural environment.
Cayford’s Surreal Exploration of Nature
In contrast, Joel Cayford’s work delves into the chemistry of the cabbage tree, known locally as ti kouka. His photographic pieces utilize digital filters to create art that often veers into the realm of surrealism. Cayford describes his evolving creative philosophy: “My creative choices and decisions these days are more about surrealism and the soul than memory and the mind.”
He emphasizes the narrative aspect of his photography, maintaining that “every picture should tell a story.” This approach adds a layer of complexity to his works, inviting viewers to engage with the images on a more profound level.
The exhibition is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with extended hours starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Visitors can view This Land until November 13 at the gallery located at 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai. This combination of innovative artistic perspectives promises to enrich the local cultural landscape and inspire discussions about the relationship between art and nature.
