Children Enhance Safety Skills at Annual Clued Up Kids Event

Almost 300 children from all 17 primary schools in the Waitaki region gathered to participate in the annual Clued Up Kids event, held at the Waitaki Community Recreation Centre. This two-day initiative focused on teaching children essential safety skills relevant to various real-life scenarios.
The event, now in its eighth year, was coordinated by the Waitaki District Council. Carrie Hamilton, the Council’s community educator and engagement officer, emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “The Council stepped in to co-ordinate the event with our partners, to ensure Clued Up Kids continued to deliver for our young people.”
The primary objectives of Clued Up Kids are to help children identify potential hazards, enhance their awareness of personal safety, and understand how to respond in situations that may pose danger. The program also highlights the role of emergency services in the community and aims to cultivate positive relationships among participants.
Hamilton noted that presenters covered a wide array of vital safety education and messaging. “Clued Up Kids is about the Waitaki community coming together to give our children the knowledge and skills needed to help keep them safe,” she added.
Throughout the event, children engaged in practical exercises designed to simulate emergency situations. These activities not only aimed to foster awareness but also encouraged teamwork and collaboration among peers. The hands-on approach allowed children to experience real-life scenarios in a controlled environment, equipping them with the tools necessary to react appropriately.
The support from local organizations and volunteers played a crucial role in the event’s success. Community members came together to provide guidance and resources, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that defines the Waitaki region.
In an era where safety and awareness are paramount, programs like Clued Up Kids serve as vital platforms for youth education. The ongoing commitment from the Waitaki District Council and community partners ensures that such initiatives remain accessible and beneficial for future generations.
As children return to their schools equipped with newfound knowledge, the impact of this event is expected to resonate throughout the community. The skills and awareness gained during Clued Up Kids will contribute to a safer environment for all, underscoring the importance of proactive safety education.
