Israeli Strikes Kill 31 in Lebanon, Escalating Regional Conflict
Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas in southern Beirut and southern Lebanon have resulted in at least 31 deaths, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The strikes began early on March 3, 2024, around 02:40 local time (00:40 GMT), prompting mass evacuations as residents fled on foot and by car, congesting escape routes.
The recent violence marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has intensified since March 2, when the United States and Israel launched an offensive against Iran. Hezbollah, a Shi’ite Muslim group backed by Iran, responded by claiming responsibility for firing rockets and drones at Israel, framing the attacks as retaliation for previous Israeli actions. The Israeli military reported no injuries or damage within its borders, but tensions continue to mount.
Military Responses and Regional Implications
Israeli Chief of the General Staff, Eyal Zamir, stated that Hezbollah “opened a campaign against Israel overnight” and asserted that the group is “fully responsible for any escalation.” Zamir emphasized the need for Israel to prepare for “many prolonged days of combat ahead.” This marked Hezbollah’s first military engagement with Israel since the 2024 conflict, while the Israeli strikes on southern suburbs were the heaviest since that time.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli strikes but cautioned against Lebanon becoming a battleground for conflicts unrelated to its interests. He stated, “This is something the state will not allow to be repeated and will not accept.” Aoun’s administration has pursued a disarmament policy aimed at Hezbollah since taking office a year ago, with support from the United States.
In a further escalation, Lebanese state media reported that the public prosecutor had instructed security forces to arrest individuals responsible for launching rockets into Israel. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam characterized the rocket launches as reckless, jeopardizing Lebanon’s security and stability.
Evacuation Orders and Ongoing Tensions
Following the initial wave of airstrikes, Israel issued evacuation warnings to residents in numerous villages across southern and eastern Lebanon. The Israeli military confirmed it targeted Hezbollah installations, including key personnel in the Beirut area. In response, Hezbollah claimed its strikes aimed at an Israeli military missile defense facility near Haifa.
While some projectiles reportedly crossed into Israel, the Israeli Air Force intercepted one, and others fell in unpopulated areas. Since a U.S.-endorsed ceasefire in 2024, Israel has conducted regular strikes against what it identifies as Hezbollah targets, alleging that the group is attempting to rearm.
Notably, this recent assault is Israel’s first significant action against the southern suburbs of Beirut since the killing of Hezbollah military official Ali Tabtabai in November 2023. On March 2, Lebanon’s presidency announced that the U.S. ambassador conveyed assurances that Israel would refrain from escalating hostilities against Lebanon, provided no further aggressive actions were taken from the Lebanese side.
As the conflict unfolds, the potential for further violence remains high, with both sides preparing for continued hostilities in a region already marked by instability.
