New Zealand Golfer Hillier Triumphs at $2 Million Open
Daniel Hillier, a golfer from Wellington, New Zealand, celebrated a significant victory at the $2 million Open on March 18, 2024. He secured the title by finishing at an impressive 22-under-par, two shots clear of his closest competitor, Australian golfer Lucas Herbert. This win marks the first time a New Zealander has claimed the tournament since Michael Hendry in 2017.
Hillier delivered a remarkable performance throughout the tournament, posting rounds of 63, 68, 64, and 67 at the scenic Millbrook Resort. His final round showcased his skill and composure, particularly during the critical moments on the 18th hole, where he sealed his victory with a safe par.
Emotional Celebration After Victory
The atmosphere at Millbrook was electric as Hillier completed his round. In a rare display of emotion, he pumped his arms in celebration after securing the win. He embraced his wife, Siobhan Hillier, and his parents before being showered with champagne by friends, including fellow New Zealand golfer Kazuma Kobori.
In an interview with Sky Sport, Hillier reflected on the significance of his achievement. “That is the second-best day of my life behind my wedding last week. It’s a lot more stressful, coming down the stretch there,” he stated. He expressed gratitude for having his family and friends present, saying, “To break the Kiwi drought … pretty special to do it in front of my family, all my friends, my wife. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time, and I knew I had the game to do it. It was just a matter of not getting ahead of myself.”
Financial Rewards and Recognition
As the champion, Hillier earned $334,800 in prize money, along with his name etched on the prestigious Brodie Breeze Trophy. This victory not only brings personal joy but also serves as a source of pride for New Zealand golf, marking a return to winning form after several years.
Hillier’s success at the Open is a testament to his dedication and skill, as he continues to make a name for himself on the international golfing stage. His triumph is celebrated not just as a personal milestone but also as a significant moment for New Zealand golf, inspiring future generations of athletes.
