Local Man Runs 30 Marathons in November for Men’s Health
Brownie, a resident of Queenstown, New Zealand, has embarked on a remarkable challenge by running a marathon every day throughout November to raise funds for Movember, a campaign focused on men’s health. This initiative, which started on November 1, aligns with Brownie’s recent milestone of turning 30 years old. Inspired by fellow members of the Industrial Fitness gym, he saw this effort as a unique way to celebrate his birthday while contributing to a worthy cause.
With a background as an ultramarathon and Hyrox competitor, Brownie understands the physical and mental demands of this undertaking. Each marathon, measuring 42.2 kilometers, requires him to dedicate four to five hours daily to running. “You’ve got to prepare yourself for the logistics of it,” he stated. The challenge encompasses not only the running but also the need to manage potential injuries, as he will cover a total distance of over 1,260 kilometers throughout the month.
So far, Brownie has successfully completed his marathons each morning before heading to his job managing a local outlet of his family’s 86-year-old mattress business. His work schedule allows him some flexibility, enabling him to maintain this rigorous training regimen. He has enjoyed favorable weather conditions since the start of the challenge, but he remains prepared to transition to a treadmill at the gym if adverse weather strikes.
“I’m keeping it nice and slow, so the body doesn’t blow up too early,” Brownie explained. “When you wake up in the morning, your joints feel it, but once you start running they seem to oil up a bit and feel fine… and I’ve got no blisters yet.”
Having moved to Queenstown about 18 months ago, he has embraced the lifestyle the region offers, often running hill trails with his dog and participating in local events like the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra, Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon, and Northburn 100.
Next Saturday, November 11, Brownie will participate in the Queenstown Marathon, marking the halfway point in his Movember mission. He has already begun to exceed his initial fundraising target of $5,000, prompting him to consider raising his goal to $10,000 as the month progresses.
Brownie’s commitment not only highlights the importance of men’s health but also showcases the community spirit and support surrounding such initiatives. As he continues this ambitious journey, he remains focused on his goal of raising awareness and funds to benefit those affected by health issues related to men.
