Woman Arrested After Daylight Shooting at Wellington Flats
A woman has been arrested following a shooting incident that occurred in broad daylight at a social housing block in central Wellington on Sunday, October 1, 2023. The event unfolded at the Pukehinau flats, where a victim sustained injuries while attempting to escape from a suspect armed with a shotgun.
The shooting occurred around 15:30 local time when a masked individual, reportedly wearing a balaclava, approached the victim’s flat. According to Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch, “An altercation of some kind has happened and the victim has run off.” This altercation prompted the suspect to chase the victim down a hallway, ultimately discharging the shotgun towards the victim as they fled onto a balcony.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as bystanders reacted to the sound of gunfire. The victim, in a desperate attempt to evade the shooter, jumped from the balcony, sustaining injuries in the process. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, providing immediate medical attention to the injured individual.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on gathering evidence and understanding the circumstances that led to the shooting. Detective Leitch emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone with information to come forward. “We want to ensure the safety of our community and prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” he stated.
The arrested woman is currently in custody as authorities continue to piece together the events of that afternoon. The New Zealand public has expressed concern over rising incidents of gun violence, particularly in urban areas, and this incident has reignited discussions about safety measures in social housing spaces.
As investigations proceed, police will be assessing security protocols at the Pukehinau flats. The community is left grappling with the impact of this event, underscoring the ongoing challenges of addressing violence in residential settings.
Officials have reassured residents that they are prioritizing safety and will implement necessary measures to restore peace in the area. The investigation remains ongoing, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
