A police pursuit in Whangarei led to the discovery of a firearm and ammunition after officers attempted to stop a vehicle reported stolen. On the afternoon of September 26, 2023, police conducting proactive patrols observed the stolen vehicle travelling south on State Highway 1 near Otaika Road.

Senior Sergeant Rene Rakete, the area response manager for Whangarei police, stated that officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver accelerated away. “When officers attempted to stop this vehicle, it accelerated away at speed, turning down a side street in an attempt to evade police,” Rakete said.

Shortly after, police located the vehicle parked at an address on Lichfield Place in Raumanga. A search of the property revealed three individuals inside, prompting further investigation. Officers uncovered live shotgun rounds, a firearm, and additional ammunition during the search.

“This was great work by our officers, who persevered when losing sight of the stolen vehicle,” Rakete noted. “We are pleased these items are now off the street and the alleged offender is facing the consequences of his actions.”

A 45-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop and unlawfully possessing a firearm. He appeared in the Whangarei District Court and has been remanded in custody, with a scheduled reappearance on September 29, 2023.

The incident underscores the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to address vehicle theft and firearm-related offences in the area.
