Police Disrupt International Drug Ring in Auckland, Seize $1M

Police in Auckland have dismantled an alleged international drug-smuggling ring, arresting eleven individuals and seizing nearly $1 million in cash, alongside a cache of firearms. This initiative, known as Operation Mexted, involved a coordinated effort between the National Organised Crime Group and customs officials, targeting a transnational organised crime network over a span of five months.

The operation culminated in a series of raids across Auckland and the Waikato region, with search warrants executed in areas including Māngere Bridge, Pakuranga, Ōtara, Blockhouse Bay, Papatoetoe, and Mt Wellington. During these raids, authorities confiscated five firearms, $915,335 in cash, 791 grams of methamphetamine, 18 grams of cocaine, and 54 grams of cannabis.

Arrests and Seizures

Among those arrested are three United States nationals, although the nationalities of the other eight individuals have not been disclosed. The police stated that the crime ring is accused of attempting to import a significant quantity of drugs, including 18 kilograms of methamphetamine and 1.6 kilograms of cannabis plants.

Acting Detective Inspector Jason Hunt reported that the first phase of the operation began in June. A search warrant executed at an Airbnb in Māngere Bridge revealed four Glock pistols and a submachine gun hidden in a suitcase within an upstairs bedroom. The three Americans were apprehended later that day in Onehunga, facing charges related to the importation of methamphetamine and involvement in an organised crime group.

In August, authorities executed additional search warrants at four properties in the greater Auckland area, leading to further drug importation and possession charges against four individuals. A significant breakthrough occurred in early September when police discovered over $800,000 in cash inside an apartment in Takapuna, prompting the arrest of a man on suspicion of money laundering.

Continued Efforts Against Organised Crime

The latest developments in the investigation occurred yesterday when police and customs officials raided ten properties across Auckland and Waikato, resulting in seven additional arrests. Hunt emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to disrupt the financial motives of these syndicates, which exploit vulnerable communities for profit.

Acting Customs investigations manager Simon Peterson highlighted the joint efforts of police and customs in tracking the suspects, claiming that the operation has prevented approximately 900,000 doses of methamphetamine from reaching the streets. The individuals arrested, comprising ten men aged between 23 and 39 and one woman aged 33, face a range of charges, including unlawful possession of firearms and various drug-related offences.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of criminal activities that threaten public safety and community well-being. The collaborative approach between the New Zealand Police and Customs aims to ensure that organised crime does not take root in the region.
