Lower Hutt Launches Young Photographer Award to Inspire Youth Creativity
Lower Hutt will host the inaugural Young Photographer Award on December 11, 2025, an event designed to celebrate the artistic talents of young individuals across the Wellington region. This new initiative reflects a significant rise in interest in photography among young people, many of whom have engaged with the medium through the Art of Seeing Academy.
Over the past year, the academy has conducted more than 80 workshops, engaging over 180 young participants, many of whom are experiencing photography for the first time. Ana Lyubich, the academy’s founder, describes the experience as transformative. “We’ve seen kids who were shy, overwhelmed or unsure of themselves suddenly light up when they look through a camera. Photography helps them slow down, focus and express ideas they sometimes can’t put into words,” she explains.
Inclusive Workshops Foster Growth
The workshops are specifically designed to be inclusive, catering to neurodiverse youth and those requiring additional learning support. “A camera becomes a bridge,” Lyubich states. “It gives kids a way to explore, communicate and feel proud of what they create.” This approach not only fosters creativity but also builds confidence among participants.
Unlike many traditional awards, the Young Photographer Award is not a competition. Each participant will be acknowledged for their effort, personal growth, and unique perspectives. “Creativity isn’t a race,” Lyubich emphasizes. “What matters is how far they have come, the confidence they’ve built and what they’ve discovered about themselves.”
Event Highlights and Future Plans
The event will showcase a large exhibit of student works, alongside insightful guest talks from notable figures such as artist and curator Etanah Lalau Talapa, Wellington photographer Chris McKeown, teen underwater photographer Miro Kennett, and former Royal Air Force and NZ Police instructor Gareth Davies.
Supported by the Hutt City Council, the Excio Photo Community, and the Captivating Photography Journal, the Young Photographer Award aims to become an annual celebration. Plans are in place to expand this initiative nationwide by 2026.
The event is free to attend, with entry requiring an RSVP via Humanitix. This initiative not only champions young photographers but also highlights the vital role of community support in nurturing creative talent.
