PM Dismisses Inquiry into McSkimming Scandal, Cites Oversight Measures
The Prime Minister has firmly rejected calls for an inquiry into the Jevon McSkimming scandal, asserting that the establishment of an Inspector General represents the government’s most effective response. This decision follows allegations made by former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, who stated on November 6, 2024, that ministers had prior knowledge of the allegations against McSkimming.
During a recent appearance on TVNZ’s Q+A, Coster claimed he had briefed both former Police Minister Chris Hipkins and current Police Minister Mark Mitchell about the allegations before they publicly acknowledged being aware. Both ministers have vehemently denied Coster’s assertions. In an interview with Morning Report, Mitchell called Coster’s claims “absolute total nonsense,” insisting that he was unaware of the allegations until the date mentioned.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed confidence in Mitchell, stating, “From my point of view, the matter’s settled.” He emphasized that the government would not pursue a further inquiry, such as a Royal Commission, as it is focused on addressing the findings of the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) report and preventing similar issues in the future.
Government’s Focus on Oversight
Luxon articulated the government’s strategy, stating, “What we need to do is jump to the solution that any inquiry would generate, which is to give us the strongest statutory oversight mechanism possible.” This approach includes the implementation of an Inspector General of Police, which he believes will enhance accountability and oversight within the police force.
Hipkins also responded to Coster’s claims, reflecting on their conversations while he served as Police Minister. He stated, “I cannot recall any discussion where it came up.” He specifically denied that Coster briefed him while they were traveling together, asserting that such an informal conversation would not have sufficed for a disclosure of this nature. Hipkins noted a broader issue within the police culture, stating, “There did appear to be a culture within the Police of downplaying the significance of any of these allegations.”
While Hipkins indicated that the decision for further inquiry rests with the government, he affirmed his support for whatever course of action is taken.
Calls for Comprehensive Investigation
The response from political figures outside the government has been critical. Marama Davidson, co-leader of the Green Party, emphasized the need to address systemic failures, urging that the focus should be on supporting victims and survivors. She remarked, “I would really like to hear any voices involved, especially men in power, to really direct their voices back to fixing the system.”
Additionally, Rawiri Waititi, co-leader of Te Pāti Māori, has called for an independent investigation separate from the IPCA, suggesting that new allegations emerging post-report indicate that the inquiry may not have been thorough. He stated, “If there are facts coming outside of the IPCA, then obviously the IPCA report hasn’t done its thorough job.”
As the government stands firm on its decision, the controversy surrounding the McSkimming case continues to evoke strong reactions from various political leaders, highlighting the ongoing debate over accountability and transparency in the police system. The implications of these discussions are likely to resonate beyond the immediate scandal as calls for reform and oversight grow louder.
