Firefighters Join Forces for Relay for Life to Fight Cancer

Firefighters from the Inglewood Volunteer Fire Brigade are set to participate in the annual Relay for Life on March 28, 2024, an event dedicated to raising funds for the Taranaki Cancer Society. This initiative not only aims to support cancer research but also serves as a poignant opportunity to remember those affected by cancer.

Among the participants are deputy chief fire officer Lance Allerby and station officer Nicky Kuklinski, who will be carrying batons across multiple teams. They are enthusiastic about contributing to the event while also honoring personal connections to the cause. Allerby reflected on his experiences, stating, “My Dad passed away with a brain tumour in 2011, and my wife has had cancer; she’s a survivor.” His involvement stems from both personal loss and a desire to give back to the community organizations that supported his family.

Kuklinski also shared her motivations for joining the relay, revealing, “I lost my mother-in-law to cancer three years ago and know many individuals in my church community who are battling the disease.” This shared experience among team members amplifies their commitment to raising awareness and funds for cancer support.

The Relay for Life event will take place at TET Stadium in Inglewood, running from 10:00 to 22:00. Participants are encouraged to join in, with family members and friends often walking alongside the teams. Kuklinski described the atmosphere as “surreal” and emphasized the social aspect of the event, where community spirit thrives.

The fire brigade plans to have a fire engine stationed nearby, prepared for any emergency that might arise during the day. This readiness highlights their ongoing commitment to public safety while engaging in community support.

Both Allerby and Kuklinski expressed appreciation for the work done by the Cancer Society. Allerby noted, “They do great work; I have a colleague who recently went through cancer treatment and found invaluable support from them.”

As the relay approaches, the firefighters remain focused on their dual roles: serving their community through emergency response and contributing to a cause that touches so many lives. Their participation not only exemplifies dedication to public service but also underscores the importance of community support in the fight against cancer.
