Walyn Tafoou, a 12-year-old student from Bathgate Park School, has achieved significant recognition by winning the Star Vocalist Award at the national finals of BandQuest. The event took place recently, and Walyn is now set to showcase her remarkable vocal talents in her school’s upcoming performance.

Reflecting on her achievement, Walyn expressed her surprise and pride, stating, “I didn’t know I was going to make it to the nationals, but I had faith and I’m so proud of myself.” Her winning performance featured renditions of Stan Walker’s “Māori Ki Te Ao” and Beyoncé’s “Love on Top,” accompanied by her band, Ōreo. She has been passionate about singing since childhood, inspired in part by her aunties, who also excel in music.

“I used to try to be a diva and sing like Beyoncé,” Walyn shared. She attributes her vocal talent to her faith, saying, “He gives me the good talent to sing and share my voice — that’s the logic.” Despite feeling nervous during her performance at the Otago regional finals, Walyn found the strength to shine once on stage.

Walyn’s music teacher, Alex Brown-Hunt, discovered her talent while she was performing with the school’s kapa haka group. He noted that her voice stood out during solo parts in the group’s Polyfest performance, highlighting her exceptional abilities.

Upcoming School Show Features Walyn’s Leadership

Walyn’s school is preparing for a show titled “Te Ao Mārama,” written by dance teacher Losana Taungapeau. The production revolves around Māori gods and methods of sustainability, culminating in an ensemble performance featuring most of the school’s students, with Walyn leading the way.

The school community is excited to celebrate her achievements and showcase her talent. Walyn’s journey underscores the importance of encouragement from family and educators, as well as the impact of community support in nurturing young talent. Through her hard work and dedication, she not only brings pride to herself but also to her school and peers.
