New Zealand’s Liam Lawson Navigates Challenges in F1 Season

New Zealand driver Liam Lawson has been navigating a tumultuous first season in Formula 1, facing significant pressures and challenges. After being promoted to the top team of Red Bull at the beginning of 2025, Lawson’s tenure lasted only two races before he was reassigned to the junior Racing Bulls team. Since then, the 23-year-old has experienced an inconsistent season, grappling with the high expectations that come with competing at the pinnacle of motorsport.
While Lawson acknowledges that the transition from Formula 2 to Formula 1 introduced him to a new level of pressure, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining a solid support network. “The longer you spend in it, the more you get used to it,” he noted, recognizing the weight of responsibility that accompanies this elite sport. He has focused on surrounding himself with trustworthy individuals who help him stay grounded amidst the chaos of the racing world.
As Lawson competes in a highly competitive environment, speculation about drivers’ futures is rampant. He shared that he has relied on a performance coach since moving to Europe at the age of 16. “I’ve had people that I trust to ensure I’m not going too far left field,” he explained. Lawson’s awareness of the mental challenges in Formula 1 is profound. He remarked, “The mental side of Formula 1 is the hardest part,” highlighting the demands of managing both external pressure and internal expectations.
Despite the challenges, Lawson remains optimistic about his future with Racing Bulls. He aspires to secure a stronger position in the constructors championship, with a particular focus on catching Williams for fifth place. Racing Bulls is currently positioned seventh, and Lawson has set his sights on regaining the consistency he demonstrated prior to the summer break.
As of now, Lawson sits in 15th place in the standings with 20 points. His recent performances have not yielded points, increasing the urgency for a top ten finish in the upcoming race in Azerbaijan. He understands that the scrutiny from media and fans can be overwhelming, but he is learning to filter out distractions. “I think it is easy to get lost in everything else,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to focus on driving and performance above all else.
With the season progressing, Lawson’s resolve to improve and deliver results remains steadfast. He recognizes that the path to success is fraught with challenges, but with the right mindset and support, he is determined to rise to the occasion.
