Lawson Navigates Challenging F1 Season with Strong Support System
New Zealand driver Liam Lawson is leaning on his support network as he faces a demanding debut season in Formula 1. After starting the year with high expectations as a part of Red Bull Racing, Lawson’s journey took a turn when he was demoted to the junior Racing Bulls team after just two races. The transition has presented a mix of challenges and learning experiences for the 23-year-old driver.
Lawson’s season has been marked by fluctuations in performance, reflecting the intense pressure that accompanies a career in the highest tier of motorsport. “We get introduced to it in Formula 2, though it is nowhere near the level of Formula 1,” he explained. “The main thing with Formula 1 is the longer you spend in it, the more you get used to it.” He emphasized the importance of having trusted individuals around him to help navigate the complexities of the sport.
Support System Crucial for Coping with Pressure
The media scrutiny surrounding Lawson has been significant, especially given the competitive environment within the Red Bull stable. “I’ve had a performance coach since I was quite young when I first moved to Europe at 16,” he shared. This support has been vital in helping him manage the overwhelming atmosphere that often accompanies high-stakes racing.
“The mental side of Formula 1 is the hardest part, maybe, dealing with the pressure of being in the sport,” Lawson stated. He spoke candidly about the constant noise from media and internal team dynamics, highlighting the importance of maintaining focus. “Trying to perform under pressure is something we spend a lot of time focusing on.”
As Lawson looks ahead to the upcoming race in Azerbaijan, he recognizes that results will ultimately determine his future with Racing Bulls. Currently positioned seventh in the constructors’ championship, Lawson aims to help his team catch Williams and secure a stronger standing. “For us, it’s extremely close, and to catch Williams and be P5 in the constructors would be a massive result for this team,” he remarked.
Lawson himself sits in 15th place in the driver standings with a total of 20 points. After failing to score points in the last two races, he enters the Azerbaijan round under pressure to achieve a top-ten finish. “There is so much talk and rumors in the sport that I’m learning to try and ignore as much as I can,” he said.
Focus on Performance Amidst Challenges
Despite the external noise, Lawson is determined to concentrate on his driving performance. “Trying to block out as much of the noise as possible and focus on the driving and performance side of the sport is essential,” he explained. He recognizes the challenge of staying grounded during both good and bad weekends, emphasizing the need to reset his mindset for each race.
The young driver has shown resilience in adapting to the demands of Formula 1, a sport known for its fierce competition and high expectations. As he continues to develop in his role with the Racing Bulls, Lawson’s commitment to maintaining a strong support network will be crucial in navigating the complexities of his first season.
