Masterton is set to undergo significant infrastructure upgrades early next year, prompting local officials to urge residents to support their retailers during the construction period. The project, scheduled to begin in early March 2024, aims to enhance pedestrian access and improve the overall look and feel of the central business district.

The Masterton District Council spokesperson confirmed that while precise details of the project are still under development, maintaining pedestrian access to local shops will remain a priority. “Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project, and the community are encouraged to keep shopping local while the work is happening,” they stated.

To assist both retailers and shoppers during the construction, the council plans to implement various initiatives, including workshops, advertising, signage, and giveaways. Discussions are underway regarding a potential “shop and win competition” in collaboration with Brent Gare and his team at Mediaworks. Although plans are still in the initial stages, this initiative aims to incentivize local shopping during the upgrades.

Infrastructure Improvements and Timeline

The upgrades will focus on critical infrastructure improvements, including the replacement of the ageing water main, road resurfacing, and the reconstruction of footpaths. These changes are designed to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians. Construction is expected to last approximately six months, concluding in late September 2024, following the conclusion of the Golden Shears and Shearing World Championships.

The project will unfold in three sections, from Jackson St to Park St. During this time, contractors will remove and replace all existing footpath elements, including bins, benches, and trees. Road closures will be communicated via the council’s website and the Antenno app, ensuring that residents stay informed about the progress of the upgrades.

Local retailers will also have access to free public parking maps, available through participating stores and the council office, to ease any inconvenience caused by the construction.

Community Engagement and Future Vision

Maseina Koneferenisi, the council’s group manager of infrastructure and assets, highlighted the project’s importance for the town’s future. “This upgrade delivers secure water infrastructure while working alongside local retailers to shape the CBD’s look and feel,” she explained. Koneferenisi noted that the council has been actively engaging with the business community to understand their vision for Queen St.

The recent business summit facilitated discussions on local aspirations as part of the “Our Future Our Story” project and the Masterton Retail and Commercial Strategy. “This upgrade gives us a chance to bring some of those ideas to life,” Koneferenisi added.

The council plans to continue collaborating with retailers to explore on-street enhancements that align with customer needs, thereby making Queen St a more inviting place for both visitors and business owners. The community’s involvement and support during this transitional phase will be crucial in ensuring the success of the upcoming upgrades.
