Waitaki App Ceases Operations Amid Competition Concerns

The Waitaki App, a local initiative promoting businesses in the Waitaki District, has announced it will cease operations by the end of this month. The decision follows concerns raised about the upcoming launch of the Oamaru Tales app, which is promoted by the Waitaki District Council (WDC) and is seen as a direct competitor.

According to a statement on the Waitaki App website, the introduction of Oamaru Tales was described as “the last straw.” The new app is set to feature lists of local businesses offering food, drinks, and attractions, thereby duplicating services already provided by the Waitaki App. Founders Cara Tipping Smith and Alex Regtien expressed their surprise at the council’s decision, indicating that many council members were also taken aback.

The WDC spokesperson acknowledged the pause in the Oamaru Tales app launch, which was decided on October 23 after “significant concerns” were identified. The council has since paused the project to address these issues, with ongoing discussions among stakeholders to find a suitable way forward.

The intent behind the Oamaru Tales app was to complement existing services, rather than compete with them. The project was funded through the Waitaki District Council’s 2023 Better Off funding, which is part of a government initiative. The app aimed to provide a self-guided tour covering a 2km loop featuring 19 heritage buildings, complete with audio stories and historical anecdotes.

The Oamaru Tales app is one of five projects developed under the Kickstart programme, which focuses on revitalizing the central business district. The funding structure involves an annual subscription of $2,500 to the host app platform, following an upfront payment of $4,500.

While the council has attempted to address concerns raised by the Waitaki App, the future of the Oamaru Tales project remains uncertain. Ongoing dialogue aims to ensure that any new initiative does not negatively impact existing local businesses and services.
