Darren Watson Pays Tribute to John Hiatt with New Album Release
New Zealand musician Darren Watson has launched a heartfelt tribute album titled Darren Watson Sings John Hiatt, celebrating the influential work of American artist John Hiatt. This collection showcases Watson’s unique interpretations of Hiatt’s songs, highlighting his deep admiration for the legendary figure in Americana and rhythm and blues.
The album features a mix of original arrangements that reflect Watson’s artistic vision. He stated, “I’ve tried to do my own thing with these songs ’cause I really don’t see any point in just doing ’em the same way John did.” Watson hopes that Hiatt, should he hear the album, recognizes the love and respect infused in every track. “This album is my tribute to one of my musical heroes,” he added, acknowledging the challenge of matching Hiatt’s renowned talent.
Watson’s new release is his third solo album within seven years, following the acclaimed Getting Sober For The End Of The World in 2020 and Too Many Millionaires in 2018. The artist, who also produces music through Lamington Records, has garnered attention for his collaborations, including the recent Dog and Pony Show by Matt Hay, which has received positive reviews for its quality.
The album features contributions from Watson’s long-time musical collaborators, including Steve Moodie on double bass, Chris Armour on electric guitar, and Delia Shanly on drums and percussion. Watson himself showcases his versatility by performing on vocals, acoustic guitar, resonator guitar, bass guitar, percussion, pump organ, melodica, and Hammond organ.
Watson’s connection to Hiatt began back in 1988 when he was touring with his blues band, Chicago Smoke Shop. After a tire blowout near Palmerston North, a cassette of Hiatt’s music was played on the tour bus. “By the time Learning How To Love You was over and the bus was moving again, I already considered myself John Hiatt’s biggest fan,” Watson recalled. He praised Hiatt for his ability to blend humor and pathos in songwriting, making each chord sequence feel fresh.
The album includes tracks such as All The Way Under, Damn This Town, and Thirty Years Of Tears. Fans can listen to and purchase Darren Watson Sings John Hiatt through his Bandcamp page at darrenwatson.bandcamp.com.
To promote the album, Watson is set to perform tracks from the collection as well as other favorites at the Kumeu Arts Centre in Auckland on November 15, 2023. This performance promises to be a celebration of both Watson’s artistry and Hiatt’s enduring legacy in the music world.
