Award-Winning Jesus Christ Superstar Set to Dazzle New Zealand
The acclaimed musical Jesus Christ Superstar will grace New Zealand stages later this year, bringing its powerful storytelling and iconic music to audiences in major cities. This reimagined production, which has garnered significant accolades, including the prestigious Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in 2017, will run in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
The show, originally composed by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, explores the final days of Jesus Christ as seen through the perspective of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. First debuted on Broadway in 1971, the musical is renowned for its rock-infused score, featuring memorable songs like “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.” The production employs a unique narrative style, conveying the story entirely through song and illuminating the complex relationships between Jesus, Judas, and their contemporaries.
Under the direction of Timothy Sheader and choreography by Drew McOnie, the current iteration of the show has already achieved sold-out performances in London, North America, and Australia. The re-staging promises to deliver an electrifying experience, combining powerful performances with innovative staging.
“We are thrilled to bring this Olivier Award-winning production to New Zealand,” said producer David Ian. “Jesus Christ Superstar has captivated audiences across the globe. Whether you’ve loved the show for years or are experiencing it for the first time, it promises to be unforgettable.”
New Zealand audiences can catch the production at The Civic in Auckland from October 21 to November 15, followed by performances at the St James Theatre in Wellington from November 18 to 28, and concluding at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch from December 2 to 6. Tickets will be available for purchase starting March 18 through Ticketmaster and Ticketek.
