Pacific Islands Forum Plans Pre-COP Meetings Ahead of Climate Summit
The Pacific Islands Forum has announced significant meetings leading up to the COP 31 climate summit, set for November 2023. Jeremiah Manele, the chair of the Forum and Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, revealed that these regional discussions will take place in Fiji in October. A special Leaders component will be hosted in Tuvalu, marking a crucial step for the region in addressing climate change.
Before these meetings, a special climate event will occur during the annual Pacific Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau in early September. According to Manele, this gathering will serve as a “pivotal moment” for Pacific nations to solidify their stance and synchronize expectations for the upcoming summit.
The decision for Pacific nations to host pre-COP events follows the loss to Türkiye in the bid to host COP 31. The Forum made a commitment to showcase the region’s leadership in climate discussions and advocate for the interests of vulnerable nations. Manele emphasized, “Pre-COP is a chance to show that when it comes to climate change, the most vulnerable nations can lead, and the world’s most powerful nations can listen.”
He expressed gratitude to the Government of Australia for its support in facilitating these regional processes. The Pacific Islands Forum has confirmed that it will assist the governments of Palau, Fiji, and Tuvalu in fulfilling their hosting responsibilities. Manele acknowledged the deep expertise that the region possesses in the COP climate process and its capacity to organize world-class events.
The upcoming meetings are expected to draw attention to the unique challenges faced by Pacific nations, many of which are among the most affected by climate change. As the world prepares for COP 31, the Pacific Islands Forum aims to highlight the urgency of climate action and foster collaboration among nations, ensuring that the voices of those most impacted are heard on the global stage.
With COP 31 approaching, the outcomes of these pre-COP meetings will be critical in shaping the dialogue around climate initiatives and commitments at the international summit. The Forum’s leadership and its strategic approach underscore the significant role that Pacific nations play in addressing global climate challenges.
