Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas is poised to become the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Nominations for the position closed on September 24, 2023, with only Manhas submitting his candidacy. His election is scheduled for September 28, 2023, and he is expected to be elected unopposed.

Although Manhas, a former batsman, never achieved international recognition with the Indian team, he transitioned into cricket administration following his first-class career. Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president, confirmed Manhas’s nomination, stating, “A panel is ready, with Mithun Manhas for the post of president.” This marks a significant milestone for the 45-year-old Manhas, who has recently served as the director of the cricket association in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Leadership Transition at BCCI

Manhas will succeed Roger Binny, a World Cup-winning player, who resigned in August 2023 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years. His appointment comes after a pivotal meeting held in New Delhi on September 23, attended by senior members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and BCCI officials. Notably, the meeting took place at the residence of Amit Shah, India’s Home Minister and father of Jay Shah, the head of the International Cricket Council.

Current BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to continue in his role, while Shukla, who briefly served as interim president, will remain as vice-president. This stable leadership structure is crucial for the BCCI as it navigates the complexities of cricket administration in India.

The BCCI’s Financial Dominance

The BCCI’s influence extends beyond cricket; it is the wealthiest national cricket board globally, generating substantial revenue from sponsorship and television deals. The sport’s immense popularity in India has been a significant factor in this financial success. As Manhas prepares to take the helm, the BCCI is set to maintain its pivotal role in the global cricket landscape.

With a new president in place, the BCCI aims to continue its upward trajectory, fostering the growth of cricket in India and beyond. As the election date approaches, the cricket community watches closely to see how Manhas will shape the future of the sport in the country.
