FIFA Seminar Prepares Elite Referees for 2026 World Cup

Doha, Qatar: A significant seminar for elite referees shortlisted to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup commenced on Monday and will continue until February 27, 2024. This event brings together 21 referees from three continents, including 10 from Asia, among them Qatari referees Abdulrahman Al Jassim and Salman Falahi, alongside 10 from Africa and one from Oceania.

Preparatory Workshop for World Cup Officials

The seminar marks the second in a series of preparatory workshops aimed at refining the skills of officials nominated for the upcoming tournament. Hani Taleb Ballan, Deputy Chair of FIFA’s Referees Committee, highlighted its importance in the evaluation process. The first workshop took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, focusing on South American referees, while a final session for 16 European referees is scheduled for March in Dubai.

Ballan noted that this seminar represents a critical stage in assessing referees’ readiness through various fitness tests, medical examinations, and discussion sessions. These components are designed to reinforce contemporary football concepts and ensure that officials are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the World Cup.

During the seminar, Massimo Busacca, Director of Refereeing at FIFA, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting referees in their preparations. He emphasized that officiating at a World Cup is a significant incentive for referees, necessitating sustained effort and ongoing development.

The selection process for referees is rigorous, based on specific criteria and comprehensive assessments. Continuous monitoring of referees’ performances across various competitions plays a crucial role in their selection for the prestigious tournament.

The seminar’s program includes a comprehensive array of technical, physical, and medical tests designed to assess each referee’s readiness. Participants will undergo an intensive training schedule that features video review and analysis of actual match situations. Practical sessions will be recorded and evaluated by international instructors, providing referees with detailed technical feedback. This approach ensures that all referees achieve peak preparedness ahead of the World Cup.
