All Saints Playgroup Hosts Reunion After 34 Years of Community
A reunion for former members of the All Saints Playgroup will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2024, from 14:00 to 17:00 at Haseler Hall, located within the All Saints Anglican Church premises in Howick. The event marks the end of a cherished institution that has fostered connections and provided joy for hundreds of families over its 34-year history.
All Saints Playgroup, which operated under the auspices of All Saints Anglican Church, held its final session for parents and their preschool children on December 9, 2023. The playgroup had been a staple in the community, offering social and learning activities twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Co-ordinator Sue McGehan, who has led the group for the past five years, expressed her sadness about the closure. “It was a place where mums and grandmas could connect and make friends, especially those new to the area, and for the children to play with toys and learn,” she said.
As the playgroup concluded its activities, All Saints Anglican Church celebrated its legacy with a heartfelt message on social media. The church acknowledged the impact of the playgroup, stating, “What a beautiful Christmas celebration to end the playgroup year. From messy play to big smiles, we’ve cherished every moment throughout the year with our fantastic little learners and supportive parents.”
The reunion event will feature a bring-a-plate afternoon tea, allowing former coordinators, treasurers, and members to reminisce and share their experiences. McGehan noted the significance of the gathering, saying, “It will be a wonderful opportunity to thank all past coordinators and treasurers while getting together with past members of the playgroup.”
Although the playgroup shared its name with the church, McGehan clarified that it operated independently. “We used the hall and name for 34 years,” she explained, highlighting the strong community ties it established over the years.
The All Saints Playgroup has left a lasting impact on the families it served, and the upcoming reunion aims to celebrate those memories and connections forged during its decades of service. As the community comes together to reflect on the playgroup’s legacy, it serves as a reminder of the importance of such gatherings in fostering relationships and support among families.
