Community Hero Natasha Bates Revives History at Howick Village
Natasha Bates has earned recognition for her exceptional volunteer work at the Howick Historical Village, where she has dedicated over 21 years to bringing history to life. Recently nominated for the Community Hero Award, Bates is celebrated for her role in running the kitchen at the grand homestead Puhi Nui during the village’s Live Days, where she creates a vibrant historical experience for visitors.
Bates’s culinary efforts involve preparing her favorite heritage recipes, which transport guests to the Victorian era through the authentic smells and tastes of traditional cooking. She operates a coal range, a significant element of the period’s culinary practices, adding authenticity to the village’s immersive experience. According to Lexie Palmer-Gapper, the general manager of Howick Historical Village, Bates’s commitment is evident in her interaction with guests. She enjoys discussing her baking techniques and the historical significance behind the recipes, enhancing the educational aspect of the village.
Community Engagement and Impact
The Community Hero Award, sponsored by New World Howick, aims to highlight individuals who make a significant impact in their communities. Recipients receive a $50 gift card and a feature in local media. Bates’s nomination underscores her remarkable contributions to the Howick community and the cultural enrichment she provides through her volunteer work.
“Natasha’s generosity in sharing her time and talents has created a true living history activation at our village,” Palmer-Gapper stated. “We are incredibly grateful for her dedication and the vibrant atmosphere she fosters during our events.”
The recognition of Bates serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement and the positive changes driven by dedicated individuals.
