A firefighter was airlifted to hospital following a significant blaze in North Canterbury on March 3, 2024. The fire ignited shortly after 14:30 local time in Rotherham, a small settlement located south of Hanmer Springs. The incident began in a shed and quickly spread to approximately 100 hectares of surrounding vegetation before being contained just before 18:00.

The challenging conditions, including soaring temperatures and strong winds, posed difficulties for emergency services. According to Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue, the injured firefighter was transported to Christchurch Hospital where they are reported to be in stable condition. It was clarified that the medical event experienced by the firefighter was “unrelated to the fire.”

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) reported that a total of 17 fire engines and multiple helicopters were deployed to combat the blaze. Fire crews remained on site throughout the night to ensure complete safety and control of the area.

Prior to the incident, FENZ had suspended all fire permits for the Canterbury region, issuing warnings about the extreme fire danger expected on that day. The rapid response and coordination among firefighting teams were crucial in managing the fire, which could have resulted in more extensive damage under such hazardous conditions.

As the situation unfolds, local authorities will continue to monitor fire risks in the area, making adjustments as necessary to protect both property and lives.
